Topic 3: Site Literacy Review - NY

NY's Project Introduction

LawHelp/NY’s project was to review and improve the readability of our web site by working with the assistance of an adult literacy organization. For the purposes of this project, we divided the web site into two main components:

  • The “content” (including fact sheets, FAQ’s, booklets and other community legal education and self help materials)
  • The pages or more structural elements the web site (including the home page, help page, about us page, navigational information, page headings and organization of each section, etc.)

To improve the readability of the first component of the site, we focused on training the advocates in our community who were responsible for writing, or who frequently wrote, legal education and self-help materials. For the second component, we asked the adult literacy organization to review the particular text and pages of the site and write a report of their recommendations for improving the site’s usability and readability.
