A Few Things to Pass Along - Broadband Funding, new Tech Report categories, and Twitter Research

Just passing along things I've seen in a various places this week:

Funding Opportunities - Broadband
Cynthia Vaughn pointed out that NTIA is offering a new round of broadband funding under the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP). Through BTOP, NTIA "will utilize $4.7 billion for grants to deploy broadband infrastructure in unserved and underserved areas in the United States, expand public computer center capacity, and encourage sustainable adoption of broadband service."  An additional $2.5 billion has been budgeted to the Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service (RUS)  support broadband deployment in rural communities.

The agencies will accept applications from February 16, 2010, to March 15, 2010.  You can learn more (and apply for funds) at http://www.broadbandusa.gov.

Add Info about Phone Systems and Call Center Software to the Tech Report

While I was out on maternity leave, a community member asked us a question about traditional (not VoIP) phone systems and call center software.  We don't have the most up to date information from the field on hand, but you guys do!  I've added categories for phone systems and call center software  to the Tech Report, and we're soliciting your opinions about the products you use.  To add your experiences, login to the Tech Report, add a product and review it.  (If you run into questions, please drop me an email at eva@lsntap.org.)

Twitter Use Research

Hubspot has released their third annual "State of the Twittersphere" report, which is a 10 page document that talks about user characterisics and patterns of use. Hubspot notes that

  • twitter's growth has begun to decline, but that users who are on twitter are more engaged and more sophisticated in how they use the service
  • twitter use peaks on Thursday and Fridays (so if you're trying to get a message across efficiently, it might make sense to post it at the end of the work week).

If your organizations uses twitter, you might want to take a look to see whether the research is useful to you.  (I got this from twitter, naturally -- via @JesseNewhart.)
